Serbia digital nomad visa: what exists, and the route people actually use

There is no Serbia digital nomad visa in the sense that Croatia or Portugal have one, and remote workers who go looking for that specific product lose months before finding the route that does work.

In short

Serbia has no dedicated digital nomad visa. Remote workers instead register as a sole proprietor under the lump-sum tax regime and obtain residence on the basis of that registered business. It is cheaper and faster than most dedicated nomad visas, and the tax treatment is why people stay.

Serbia does not have a digital nomad visa

This needs saying plainly because a large amount of content online implies otherwise, usually by describing Serbia's short visa-free entry as though it were a nomad programme. It is not one. It confers no right to reside beyond the permitted stay and no tax status at all.

Serbia has separately introduced favourable treatment for certain foreign remote workers, which further muddies the search results. That is a tax measure, not a visa, and it does not by itself give you the right to live here.

The sole-proprietor route remote workers actually use

The standard path is to register as a preduzetnik (a sole proprietor) under the lump-sum taxation regime, and then apply for temporary residence on the basis of that business.

Its appeal is specific: the tax is a fixed monthly amount determined by activity code and location rather than a percentage of what you invoice. A developer billing foreign clients pays the same monthly obligation whether that month was good or bad, and there is no requirement to keep full double-entry books.

Tax treatment for a remote worker registered in Serbia

Under the lump-sum regime your monthly obligation is set in advance and comprises income tax plus mandatory social contributions. Because it is fixed, the effective rate falls as your invoicing rises. Which is precisely why the regime attracts higher-earning freelancers, and also why it carries a turnover ceiling.

Cross the ceiling and you move to a regime with real bookkeeping. That transition is manageable but it is not automatic and it is not free, so it belongs in the plan from the start rather than as a surprise.

How Serbia compares to Georgia, Montenegro and Albania

Serbia's advantages over the usual alternatives are a genuine path to permanent residence and then citizenship, a real banking system, and a large enough city that the infrastructure is not a compromise.

The honest disadvantages: Serbia is not in the EU or Schengen, so the permit gives you no mobility elsewhere; the paperwork is heavier than Georgia's; and everything official runs in Serbian, which means translation costs are a permanent line item rather than a one-off.

Frequently asked questions

No. Serbia has no dedicated digital nomad visa. Remote workers obtain residence through a registered sole proprietorship or company instead.

When this is not the right route for you

  • You want residence without registering a business or paying Serbian tax. That combination does not exist here.
  • You expect EU or Schengen mobility from a Serbian permit.
  • Your income cannot be documented with contracts or invoices.
  • You want to keep your tax residence elsewhere while holding Serbian residence. That is a question for a tax adviser in both countries, and the answer is frequently not what people hope.
